CALENDAR OF RECENTLY-COMPLETED AND FORTHCOMING CONFERENCES

2009 American Massage Therapy Association National Convention (post-convention listing)

Several of the continuing education (CE) options offered at the 2009 American Massage Therapy Association National Convention represented the Research Track sponsored by the Massage Therapy Foundation. Included among these CE options were the following sessions (presenters indicated parenthetically): Research Rocks (Angela Palmier and Chris Alvarado); Teaching Research Literacy (Pete Whitridge); Case Report Contests: Transforming an Interesting Case into an Informative Publication (Karen Boulanger); Trust This, Doubt That: Evaluating the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly in Published Research (Karen Boulanger and Glenn M. Hymel); and Current Research on Cancer and Massage Therapy Foundation Case Report Winner Presentations (Leila Kozak, Jennifer Rosen, Marlaine C. Smith, Amy Axt Hanson, and Erika Larson).

Second International Fascia Research Congress (post-congress listing)

October 27 – 30, 2009; Amsterdam, Netherlands

Recent basic and applied research and reviews in soft connective tissue sciences at all levels: molecular, cellular, tissue, organ, compartment, and limb or trunk and whole body ... and in all disciplines: molecular biology, cytology, histology, anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, biomechanics, neurology, and surgery, among others. The conference included free oral and poster presentations of peer-reviewed research, and special panels and presentations addressing the research interests of clinical practitioners in acupuncture, chiropractic, massage, neuromuscular therapies, osteopathy, physiatry, physical therapy, sports medicine, structural bodywork, and surgery. Clinical practice techniques demonstrated at both podium and small-group sessions aimed to bring manual therapy clinicians and scientists together to enhance common research interests and communication. Post congress workshops were held Saturday, October 31, 2009, at Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam. These workshops provided a forum for clinical practitioners to present their methodologies and research questions so as to cross-educate other clinicians and stimulate new areas of inquiry by research scientists. The 2009 Fascia Congress was co-sponsored by the Massage Therapy Foundation. The INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE AND BODYWORK is serving as one of two post-congress publishing venues for selected presentations, with the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies functioning as the other publishing option.

Highlighting Massage Therapy in CIM Research (post-conference listing)

May 13 – 15, 2010; Seattle, WA, USA

The Massage Therapy Foundation presented the second Highlighting Massage Therapy in CIM Research conference, May 13 – 15, 2010. This three-day conference (supported in part by RI3AT005420 from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine) brought together massage and manual therapy practitioners, educators, CIM researchers, allied health professionals, and others interested in massage research. Current research related to massage and other manual therapy-specific research was presented, with a special focus on translational research and public health. The INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE AND BODYWORK (IJTMB) and the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies (JBMT) are serving as the two post-conference publishing venues for selected presentations.

NCCAM-Funded Research for Fiscal Year 2009

Use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine in the United States

Approximately 38% of adults in the United States aged 18 years and over and nearly 12% of US children aged 17 years and under use some form of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), according to the 2007 National Health Interview survey released in December 2008. The survey marks the first time that questions were included on children’s use of CAM.
