The Massage Therapy Foundation presented the second Highlighting Massage Therapy in CIM Research conference, May 13 – 15, 2010. This three-day conference (supported in part by RI3AT005420 from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine) brought together massage and manual therapy practitioners, educators, complementary and integrative medicine (CIM) researchers, allied health professionals, and others interested in massage research. Current research related to massage and other manual therapy-specific research was presented, with a special focus on translational research and public health. The International Journal of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (IJTMB) and the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies (JBMT) are serving as the two post-conference publishing venues for selected presentations.

Several of the continuing education (CE) options offered at the 2010 AMTA National Convention were in the Research Track coordinated with the Massage Therapy Foundation. Included among these CE options were the following sessions (presenters indicated parenthetically): Case Reports: Why They’re Important and How to Submit Your Own (Michael Hamm); Steps Toward Massage Therapy Guidelines: A First Report to the Profession (Dale Healey and the Massage Therapy Foundation Best Practices Committee); Current Research: Pediatric Massage (Shay Beider, Sheila Wang, Karen Boulanger, and Sean Phipps); Cancer and Massage Therapy: What Does the Research Say? (Tracy Walton); and The Effects of Massage Therapy on Lumbar Spondylolisthesis (Shannon Halpin). In addition to the CE options, Foundation-sponsored posters were also displayed. The Foundation’s post-convention workshop was held on September 26 and 27 and included the following two courses presented by Tracy Walton: Cancer and Massage—Safe Practices for Massage Therapists; and Massage Elements for Medically Complex Clients.

Details regarding the Third International PKP Scholarly Publishing Conference are available online. The call for papers guidelines have a submission deadline of March 31, 2011. This international conference is the sequel to the first two comparable conferences emphasizing open-access publishing that were held in Vancouver, Canada in 2007 and 2009.

The 2012 Fascia Congress will, as always, center on the latest and best research on the human fasciae. Additionally—and recognizing the interests of clinicians in gaining insights that will bear on practical applications—the program is designed to weight presentation time toward relating research findings to clinical issues, particularly the practical applications of fascial layers. Hosting and governing sponsors, are, respectively, the Massage Therapists’ Association of British Columbia (MTABC) and the Ida P. Rolf Research Foundation . Additional academic centers and professional membership organizations are invited to financially support the 2012 congress in Vancouver. Important upcoming dates (subject to change) are as follows: registration opens March 1, 2011; and submission deadlines are April 1, 2011 for workshops and July 1, 2011 for abstracts.

Research and training grants for both new and ongoing research funded or administered by the NCCAM during fiscal year 2010 are available in an online table . The table lists the project number, project title (with link to the abstract), principal investigator, institution, and state. Also included are the archived research awards charts by fiscal year.
Approximately 38% of adults in the United States aged 18 years and over and nearly 12% of US children aged 17 years and under use some form of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), according to the 2007 National Health Interview survey released in December 2008. This survey marks the first time questions were included on children’s use of CAM.

Sponsor: NCCAM/NIH/DHHS
Synopsis: The sponsors invite applications for the PCCTR initiative, which is designed to foster development of translational tools that will contribute to rigorous clinical CAM research and further development of clinical research expertise and leadership at CAM institutions and in the field in general. It is expected that such tools will further the rigorous study of CAM practices that are already in wide use by the American public. CAM practitioners play a vital role in rigorous research on CAM. The PCCTR will support partnerships between faculty at CAM institutions and at highly research-intensive institutions in research projects directed toward the development of CAM clinical research translational tools, including approaches, tools, and methodology that will make substantial contributions to the progress of CAM research. Each PCCTR must include at least two, but not more than three, research projects throughout the funding period. Each PCCTR should unite CAM and conventional research institutions and individuals with complementary strengths in a synergistic fashion, such that the research and intellectual productivity of the proposed projects is likely to be substantially enhanced by the proposed collaborative partnership, the abilities of the proposed collaborators, and the proposed PCCTR administrative structure. This FOA will use the U19 cooperative agreement mechanism.

The first of two editorials in this current issue announces in detail the inclusion of the IJTMB in NIH’s PubMed Central and its open-access affiliated Quertle database, the latter of which provides a semantic-based option to the more conventional exclusive use of keywords for literature searches. PubMed Central and Quertle are in addition to the following six databases already indexing this journal: Directory of Open Access Journals , CrossRef , Healthindex , Index Copernicus , Google Scholar , and Hinari .
As announced previously, beginning with the December 2010 issue an outbound linking option has been added to the HTML version of each editorial/article entry. Specifically, this feature provides a direct outbound link from a cited reference in an IJTMB article to CrossRef, PubMed Central, and/or PubMed if one or more of these three databases has indexed the reference.
